Ottawa 5, Washington 2

Things are getting silly in the East. The Sens are currently two points out of their division lead while the Capitals continue to slip out of contention. Craziness! Now it has to be noted that Ottawa has played a whopping four extra games on the Bruins so I would not be too worried as a Boston fan, but it sure looks like Ron MacLean’s bold prediction that Ottawa would make the playoffs is going to come true. Karlsson and Michalek led the offense tonight … it’s crazy what Karlsson is doing … now 60 points in 61 games. Michalek has 27 goals now on the year. Ovechkin was held out of this game due to some kind of ailment. Not good.

Boston 4, St. Louis 2

The Bruins got back on track, scoring four goals on the most stingy team in the league and it’s most stingy goalie, Brian Elliott. They scored four times on just 19 shots. Marchand scored twice and has 21 goals on the year. Thomas was strong in goal, making 30 saves for the win. Nice to see Boston get back in the win column after a round month (by their lofty standards). Halak has missed 3 straight games for the Blues do to the flu.

Colorado 4, Los Angeles 1

The woes continue for the Kings. Colorado scored three times in the 1st and cruised to a 4-1 victory. Dustin Brown broke the shutout early in the 3rd but by then it was already 4-0 and the Kings are not coming back from that. Varlamov actually had a good start, nice to see. Downie made his debut for the Avs, got a penalty and played 16 mins. Colorado is now just two back of LA for 8th in the West. Big win for them.

I am not huge into Western’s, but have enjoyed a few and this one looks decent enough and it certainly has a twist on the classic theme. The story is kind of funny, definitely different … The film follows an odd romance and the resulting emotional confusion of an outlaw who reluctantly develops strong feelings for a woman he has kidnapped. Yet when the outlaw (Cohen Holloway) tries to force himself on the young and beautiful Isabella Montgomery, he finds himself unable to ‘get it up’ due to a surprising bout of performance anxiety. Unable to understand the reason for his erectile dysfunction, the outlaw goes on a quest to find a solution for his problem with the kidnapped Isabella in tow. He tries various means to cure his ailment – including tracking down fancy doctors and sage medicine men – all in an attempt to fix his problem and finally having his way with Isabella. But the pair are pursued by an unpredictable posse who are set on killing both the outlaw and Isabella, who they have mistaken for a whore and accomplice to the outlaw. Adventure, drama and humor ensue when this unlikely duo are forced to help each other to survive in this unique film. Might have a few laughs, the rating is strong, R for violence and sexual references, and the girl is cute. Not a bad combo. Take a look.

He did it in front of the crowd he used to play for too, the team that deemed him expendable. It must have felt pretty good after all the time away. Show up the team that traded you a little. There are reports of him mocking the crowd but looked more like a simple enough, albeit flamboyant, goal celebration. Sure he whopped it up a bit more, how could you not against your former team.

The crowd actually gave him a real nice ovation while he was out celebrating for his 1st star selection.

I still cannot stand Ribeiro. Definitely one of my own personal ‘most hated’ players in the league. I’ll never forget the mockery he made of hockey with the diving act below or the time he’d acted like he’d been shot when playing up a phantom high stick. Hate divers. He’s a cocky guy, that bugs me I guess. Anyway … when asked if he wanted to prove the Canadiens made a mistake in trading him a few years back, he simply stated the following:

“I’m sure they know they made a mistake.”

Unfortunately for him, his Canucks could not solve Pekka Rinne enough for the win, but this was pretty nice. I think what’s most shocking about this play is that it was Shea Weber that had the breakaway. Not often you see a D-man in on a breakaway.

Once again, Luongo has overcome an awful start to post some big Fantasy numbers. He currently has a 25-11-6 record with a 2.32 GAA and a .921 Save%. His value is huge in Head to Head leagues where you can ride out the early rough patches. He’ll hurt you more in Rotisserie leagues though. Quite the enigma Lou is.

He’s the Ovechkin of a couple years ago, although not quite as prolific or highlight reel worthy. He scored twice last night in a Tampa Bay win and has the Lightning sniffing at a playoff spot with his recent surge. He’s scored 9 goals in 9 games to effectively win the scoring title early. It would be shocking to see anyone catch him at this point considering Malkin is closest with 33 goals.

Forgetting his hot streak, his 42 goals in 59 games has him on a 58 goal pace. Now that would indeed be prolific and put him into some pretty elite company. My guess is he ends up around 53-54 goals but you never know with a guy like Stamkos … if he gets hot, and he is, he can score in bunches. Look what Perry did down the stretch for Anaheim last year.

More importantly, the Lightning have gone 5-3-1 over Stamkos’ 9 game surge and now sit just 5 points out of 8th in the East and coincidentally, 5 points out of the division lead which is a guaranteed 3rd seed in the playoffs. I suspect it’s too little too late for Tampa Bay, so hard to leap frog so many teams, especially with the goaltending the Lightning get, but if Stamkos keeps it going, who knows. Anyway, it will be fun to see how he finishes up the year.

He’s been putting up points and playing much better. Maybe that night was the much needed confidence boost he’s been waiting for. Since the outburst, Gagne has put up 5 goals and 10 points through 8 games. And this is for an Oilers team that has struggled, going 3-4-1 in that same span. Gagner now has 40 points, (14 goals) in 52 games this season. That’s pretty respectable.

So now comes the trade deadline. First off … Gagner is a restricted free agent at the end of the year. The season he is having is certainly going to boost his value from the $2.275M he is making today. Putting a price though on what he’s done this year is going to be tough. What do the Oilers do about Sam Gagner.

His trade value has never been higher. The former 6th overall pick is about to eclipse his career highs in goals (16) and points (49). Could probably get a pretty nice return for the kid at the deadline and the Oilers could certainly use some help in goal and on defense where they are incredibly weak.

But what if? What if Gagner just took a bit to find his game at the pro level? What if the kid that put up 118 points in 53 games back in the OHL has finally settled into the NHL. He’s only 22, stranger things have happened. Sometimes it takes a bit. He was not given the luxury of developing in the AHL like some stars. What if Gagner is suddenly a 70-80 point forward? Obviously his recent stretch is a real short span. What merit do you put into the 8 point night? How does that factor into anything or do you just discount it as something special that happened?

The Oilers are real deep as mentioned at forward. I guess the question will be how much another team is willing to roll the dice with Gagner and what they will pony up. Are they getting a 45 point scorer or a 70 point guy, the guy that Gagner was expected to be. He’s going to be one of the bigger gambles at the trade deadline. His value has never been higher and the Oilers have some tough decisions over the next few days. Who are their building blocks up front going forward and who can go?

Columbus 6, San Jose 3

Jeff Carter made himself look pretty attractive tonight in advance of the trade deadline. He scored a hat-trick and did Columbus a big favor if they are in fact shopping him around. Carter now has 15 goals on the year but has been much better lately. Prospal picked up 3 assists as well. Mason stopped 38 shots in a pretty wide open game. Tough loss for the Sharks as they have looked pretty good lately and are battling for seeds at the top of the Western conference.

Philadelphia 5, Winnipeg 4

The Flyers got a goal with 10 seconds left from Wayne Simmonds and then Jagr scored in OT to give the Flyers a big win over the surging Jets. Tough loss for the Jets, although they never should have been in a position to win, as the Flyers outshot them a whopping 55-26 in the game. Well done Bryzgalov. Pavelec was pretty damn good despite allowing 5 goals. Hartnell scored his 28th for the Flyers … wonder if he can duplicate the year he’s having this season.

New Jersey 4, Toronto 3, OT

The Devils escaped a scare on a weak goal from Mark Fayne in overtime. Kessel scored his 31st goal of the year to tie the game in the final minute but the Devils got the extra point back. Clarkson got his 23rd for New Jersey.

Buffalo 2, NY Islanders 1

Thomas Vanek scored his 22nd in the 2nd period and Ryan Miller made it hold up, making 30 saves and looking a lot more like his old self lately for the Sabres. Buffalo has been playing much better and are slowing pulling themselves back into the playoff picture. Too little too late? Parenteau picked up his 42nd assist tonight for the Isles … nice year he’s having.

Pittsburgh 2, NY Rangers 0

Malkin scored a goal and picked up an assist and that was more than enough as Marc-Andre Fleury was on his game tonight, stopping all 27 shots for the shutout. Great win for the Penguins as they have been hearing footsteps from the Senators in the standings. This keeps them up with the upper group in the standings.

Tampa Bay 3, Anaheim 2

Steven Stamkos is going to hit 50 goals well before the end of the season given the pace he is currently on. He scored twice tonight to give him 42 on the year with plenty of games to go. Purcell had a nice night as well with 3 points. Garon got the win, making 28 saves. Do the Lightning now have illusions of making the playoffs? The inspired play of late has them within dreaming distance now.

Dallas 3, Montreal 0

The Stars took advantage of a punchless Montreal team tonight. Ribeiro scored his 13th in his return to Montreal. Lehtonen made 31 saves for his 2nd shutout of the year. Price stopped 33 shots in defeat. Going to be a tough finish for him. Benn is still out for Dallas.

Nashville 3, Vancouver 1

Mike Fisher had a big night with 3 points in leading the Predators over the Canucks in a fairly big Western Conference tilt. The Predators are in the thick of things in the West and this win will give them some added confidence. Rinne was great as always, stopping 32 shots. Luongo was in goal for the loss, stopping 25 shots.

Chicago 2, Detroit 1

Big win for the Hawks. Jimmy Hayes led the way with captain Toews out of the lineup, scoring a goal and picking up an assist. Crawford was really strong again, making 31 saves for the win. Tough to know what to make of this guy this year. Howard was back in goal for the Wings, making 27 saves in the loss.

Edmonton 6, Calgary 1

Am sure the Flames would like to have this one back. No matter the standings, always a good game when these two collide. Calgary is battling for a playoff spot and this will not help. The Oilers scored four times in 10 minutes in the 2nd to wipe out the Flames, led by Eberle and Gagne, who each had 3 points. Eberle has 26 goals on the year now. Dubnyk made 21 saves for the win.

Phoenix 5, Los Angeles 4, SO

The Kings generally would expect to win if they score 4 goals this year, so this is a tough loss. Radim Vrbata continued his great year, scoring his 30th of the season with just over two minutes to go to force overtime. Whitney and Boedker scored in the shootout to win it for the Coyotes. Doan picked up a couple goals, giving him 18 on the season, nice to see. Big win for the Coyotes as they pull away from the Kings in the standings a little bit more.

That being said, this was a pretty entertaining game, at least in terms of highs and lows. The Leafs started a four game homestand tonight and it’s a pretty pivotal one with games against the Capitals, Panthers and Devils, as well as the Sharks. They did not get the result they wanted but given how the game went, a point is ok. It was just tough losing on a real weak goal in OT, 4-3 to the Devils.

The game might not even have gone to overtime if not for some late heroics from Kessel. He scored with 44 seconds to go to snatch a clear victory away from the Devils. The Leafs really pressed in the 3rd but it looked as though they would come up short after a late goal allowed in the 2nd. Kessel changed that.

Gustavsson played a big part in how the game unfolded tonight. He was weak on some of the early Devils’ goals, did not look good at all. In the 3rd though, he made a number of huge saves, stuffing Kovalchuk on a breakaway as well. It was a great effort in the 3rd for sure. Then there was the OT winner. A weak shot from the point, going wide, that Gustavsson somehow deflected into his own net. It was really tough to watch after it appeared that the Leafs might have a shot at two points when just minutes ago it looked as though they would have none. Lupul hit the post down at the other end of the ice just moments before as well.

Kessel got his 31st, marching towards that 40 mark. MacArthur continued his hot play, picking up his 18th goal. Connolly got his 9th of the season for the other Leafs marker. The Leafs fell behind 2-0 but battled back to tie it mid way through the 2nd. Ex-Leaf Ponikarovsky scored late in the 2nd though to set them on their heels again.

It’s tough to have a bunch of faith in the Leafs right now. They fight hard enough, they are young though and that can be both an asset and a point of concern. The goalies are unproven and nights like this one are likely to be the norm the rest of the way. With the Senators surging ahead again, it’s going to be real tough to nail down that last playoff spot. The Leafs will have to beat two of the following … Washington, Florida and Winnipeg. It’s hard to know what to make of tonight. The Devils have been really hot, so a point against them is not bad, but then again, the Leafs need to beat these teams close in the standings to ensure they are still playing when games start to matter later in April. They will likely need two wins against the next three teams at home. That’s going to be tough.

It’s a move that makes sense. Joey MacDonald has been awesome since being called up as help to fill in for an injured Jimmy Howard. With Howard out, Conklin and MacDonald were man the pipes for the Wings. MacDonald quickly seized control of the position though with his stellar play. He’s gone 6-1-1 since being called up, posting a stellar 1.66 GAA and a .934 Save%. Very nice numbers. The Wings can afford to be cautious now with easing Howard back into the lineup, although he is ready to go. MacDonald’s play sent Conklin packing.

I thought Conklin would be a great backup for the Wings this year, but he’s been pretty bad. He owns a 3-5-0 record and a brutal 3.40 GAA and .878 Save%. Not numbers that instill confidence to put you in to give the starter a break. MacDonald has earned the chance at more play time at the NHL level. To be fair as well … MacDonald is playing for an awesome Red Wings club right now, doing a great job infront of him and likely his numbers are significantly buoyed by this fact. He’s owed some credit for a job well done in goal so far though.

MacDonald has never really hit his stride at the NHL level, the 32 year old had a run with the Isles in which he played in 49 games, but this was back in 2008-09 and the Islanders were awful … the worst team in hockey. MacDonald put up a 3.37 GAA and a .901 Save% that season and has never really had a solid look after.

On the plus side for the Red Wings, they have MacDonald under contract for another season at the bargain price of $500K against the Cap. He’s earned that money in the short stint he’s played this year alone. Bryzgalov for example is paid over 10 times more than MacDonald … are the Flyers getting 10 times the value? GM Holland just keeps getting it done in Detroit.

The transition back though has been anything but smooth. The Caps have lost both games he’s been a part of and Green has been on the ice for a lot of goals against. Before abandoning ship though, might want to give the guy a few games to get up to speed. He has after all played in just 12 games this year.

Green started out in the Caps 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning over the weekend. He played just 14 minutes, low for him, and was looking for more following the game. He got his wish last night in Carolina but things went about as bad as they could for the star defenseman. He finished the game a -3 in 21 minutes of ice time. He was the only Capital player that finished worse than a -2. So two games in, Green is a -3 with just a single shot on goal. Lots to be desired.

It will come though, even at this worst, Green has been better than most offensively, and has been Fantasy gold. He put up back to back 70+ point seasons before being hurt last season. Last year it was 24 points in 49 games as he tried to battle through injury issues. This year he has 6 points in 12 games, but they all came in the 10 previous games he played. In fact, the 6 points came in the 7 games he played to start the year when he was feeling good and before his first injury.

Give Green a couple weeks, you’ve hung on this long, might as well see him through for a bit. He’s a big piece of the Capitals offense, or was at least before Hunter came in, it will be interesting to see how he fits. Asking the coach though for more ice time then finishing a -3 will never help things. ‘Fun’ times in Washington.

This year’s Norris Trophy race is no exception. Early on it seemed that Shea Weber would be the likely candidate, spending a couple years coming up short, his game had come together nicely and his combination of offense and defense seemed to finally be on track to get recognized. He got hurt though and fell back a bit, although still has an admirable season going. The one guy that jumps out in the defensive ranks, is a guy doing it all offensively from the blueline … Erik Karlsson.

Karlsson right now has left all competition behind and could likely take the rest of the year off and still win the scoring race among defensemen. He has 12 goals and 57 points for the Senators this season in 60 games. Throw in a +14 rating, and you’ve got a very nice line. But how much does this remind you of the 2009-10 season? The season where Mike Green of the Washington Capitals actually finished with more points than games played as a defenseman. He had 76 points in 75 games, and even sported a hefty +39 rating. The knock on Green … he was not well rounded enough defensively, often sacrificing defense for offense. Forget that it worked for that +39 rating, it did not matter, he was passed over for the Norris.

Is there any way to describe Karlsson other than a guy that often passes on defensive responsibility for offensive chances? Probably not. He’s a gambler and he’s great at contributing offense to his team. Is that going to be the knock though that costs him a Norris trophy? Shea Weber has 12 goals and 38 points this season with a +17 rating in Nashville. He’ll likely hit 50 points and everyone knows what he brings to the table in terms of his all around game. What about sentimental favorite Nicklas Lidstrom … could he win his record tying 8th? He’s got 31 points and a +26 rating this year. Almost seems like the ‘right thing to do’ to give him another so he can share the record for most Norris Trophies.

The precedent seemed to be set when Green was passed over for the Norris a couple years back. Karlsson is doing something pretty special in Ottawa this season, but I will be surprised to see him rewarded for his accomplishments at seasons end. I am not even sure I would give him the trophy … just seems harder than giving it to Green a couple years back. We’ll see I guess how the final 20 games or so unfolds. If Weber has a solid finish, he’ll take the award in my mind. Almost seems like you have to pay your dues for a bit to take home the Norris.
